Augustana University hit a milestone this month as 70 students became the first graduates of the university's Doctor of Physical Therapy program on May 24, representing the institution's first doctoral program to reach commencement.
The ceremony celebrates students who have completed nearly two years of rigorous academic study, clinical rotations and hands-on training to become licensed physical therapists in their communities. Many graduates have already secured positions in regional health care systems, addressing critical workforce needs across South Dakota and neighboring rural communities.
Eight students from the graduating cohort, who met rigorous academic and clinical criteria, were granted early approval to sit for the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) in April. All eight passed, demonstrating both the program’s academic rigor and its students’ readiness to enter the field.
"This class represents not only academic excellence but a deep commitment to patient care and community service," said Matthew Volansky, PT, DPT, PhD, MBA, FAMIA., dean of the School of Health Professions at Augustana University. "They have set a high standard for those who will follow."
Launched in partnership with Evidence In Motion in 2023, the program was designed to expand access to advanced clinical education while supporting Augustana's mission of community health service. Its hybrid model combines online coursework with in-person laboratory sessions at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota, supplemented by more than 30 weeks of clinical experience in various health care settings nationwide.
This graduation also represents Augustana's strategic investment in South Dakota's health care infrastructure and demonstrates the university's growing leadership in professional education.
