This December, Hawai‘i Pacific University (HPU) and Evidence In Motion (EIM) are proud to celebrate a groundbreaking achievement: the graduation of the inaugural cohort of Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. As the first-ever DPT graduates in Hawai‘i, these 93 trailblazing individuals are not just earning their degrees—they are making history.

A Vision Realized

When HPU partnered with EIM to launch Hawai‘i’s first DPT program in 2022, the mission was clear: to create accessible, world-class education that prepares culturally responsive health care professionals for diverse communities. This innovative hybrid program was designed to meet the unique needs of Hawai‘i, where a shortage of physical therapists and limited local graduate health care educational opportunities often required students to leave the islands to pursue their dreams

Two years later, this vision has become a reality. The inaugural cohort represents a diverse group of students, hailing from 26 states and six distinct racial and ethnic backgrounds. Notably, 25% of these graduates resided in Hawai‘i at the time of admission, and many plan to remain in the islands, strengthening local health care for years to come.

Looking Ahead

As this first cohort steps into their roles as physical therapists, they carry with them the knowledge, skills, and compassion to make a lasting impact. Their journey is a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of education and the importance of investing in the future of health care.

Congratulations to the graduates, and thank you to everyone who helped make this milestone possible. Together, we’re shaping the future of health care—one student, one community, and one achievement at a time.
